About Greytown High

Established in 1883, Greytown High School is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most historic co-educational schools. For more than 140 years, the school has combined strong tradition with a forward-thinking approach to education, nurturing confident, capable young adults.

Located in the Umvoti region, Greytown High offers a balanced and holistic education built on discipline, character and academic excellence. With approximately 550 learners, the school remains large enough to offer opportunity and choice, yet small enough to maintain a strong sense of community and personal attention.

Grounded in Christian values and guided by the motto Fortiter et Tenaciter — bravely and perseveringly — Greytown High develops learners who are academically prepared, socially responsible and ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

Founded 1883

Government education in Greytown began in 1883 with the establishment of the first co-educational government school. Over the decades, the school evolved, expanded and relocated to its current site in 1962, officially opening the present campus in 1963.

For more than 140 years, Greytown High School has upheld a tradition of academic standards, strong values and community spirit. Generations of learners have passed through its halls, many going on to excel at universities across South Africa and abroad.

The school badge reflects this proud heritage. The elephant symbolises strength and the town’s historical roots, while the belt represents unity. The Latin motto Fortiter et Tenaciter reminds learners to act bravely and persevere in all they do.
